September Gardening Chores

September is here, and while we may still have a few hot days ahead, fall is right around the corner! This is a great month to start transitioning your garden from summer to fall and preparing your landscape for the cooler months ahead. Here’s your September task list from For Garden’s Sake:

Your Task List

1. Planning & Preparation:

  • Plan your fall vegetable garden with cool-season crops like kale, collards, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and turnips.
  • Start planning your fall containers and seasonal color.
  • Take note of plants that need to be moved, divided, or replaced.

2. Maintenance:

  • Continue watering, especially newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and containers.
  • Refresh mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Remove spent summer annuals and vegetables.
  • Keep an eye out for pests and diseases.
  • Lightly prune dead or damaged growth, but save major pruning for the appropriate season.

3. Planting:

  • Plant cool-season vegetables and herbs.
  • Add fall color with mums, pansies, violas, ornamental peppers, and asters.
  • Begin planting trees, shrubs, and perennials as temperatures start to cool.

4. Lawn & Landscape:

  • Keep your lawn watered during dry periods.
  • Pull weeds before they have a chance to go to seed.
  • Clean up fallen leaves and other debris as needed.
  • Start preparing garden beds for fall planting.

As we transition into fall, don’t let the cooler nights fool you—September can still bring plenty of heat in North Carolina. Keep an eye on your plants and adjust your watering as needed. Fall is also a great time to get new plants established before winter arrives!

A little preparation now will set your garden up for a beautiful fall season. Happy Gardening!
