Planting

  • Continue planting warm-season vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant.
  • Direct sow beans, cucumbers, squash, and melons for a late summer harvest.
  • Plant heat-tolerant annual flowers for continued color.  We have lots to choose from in the Garden Center!

Maintenance

  • Water plants deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Mulch garden beds to conserve moisture and control weeds.
  • Fertilize vegetables and flowers as needed to support growth and blooming.
  • Monitor for pests and diseases, and treat promptly.
  • Prune roses and other summer-flowering shrubs.
  • Deadhead flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming.
  • Continue staking or caging tall or vining plants.
  • Weed regularly to prevent competition for water and nutrients.

Harvesting

  • Harvest vegetables as they ripen, including beans, cucumbers, and squash.
  • Pick berries regularly to encourage further production.
  • Harvest herbs frequently to encourage new growth.

Planning

  • Plan for succession planting of quick-maturing crops.
  • Consider starting seeds indoors for fall crops like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower.  Yes, really!
  • Evaluate your garden and make notes for improvements next year.
