FALL FUN DAYS

Weekend fun for everyone!

September 16 – October 30

Raise your hand if you’re ready for fall! The leaves changing colors, pulling out cozy sweaters and blankets, lighting candles, decorating or carving pumpkins, delicious seasonal food and drinks – what’s not to love?

You’ll  find everything you need for fall gardening, decorating with pumpkins, and planting fall flowers (pansies, mums, and more!) right here at the Garden Center! We’ll have MORE extended-hour Fridays so you have even more time to shop and enjoy a drink or Sunset Slush while you’re at it.

That’s not all: this year we are fully embracing the fun, the vibes, and the season of change. We’ll have a wide variety of events, classes, workshops, and more so you can enjoy autumn at For Garden’s Sake!

Class

Happy, Healthy Houseplants Level 3

Wednesday, October 5, 6PM-7PM

Location: The Robin’s Nest

Ready to step up your houseplant game? Learn fun techniques, new methods of growing, and more with our all-new Happy, Healthy Houseplants Level 3 class! This class will focus on different growing mediums – including mixing your own soil, growing on moss poles, problem solving for those pesky plants, using grow lights, information about caring for rare varieties, and more! Completion of Happy, Healthy Houseplants Levels 1 and 2 is strongly recommended before taking this course.

Fee is $15/person; includes a river stone humidity tray

Trivia Night

Friday, October 7, 5PM-8PM

Location: The Garden Center

Sharpen your trivia knowledge and grab your friends because we are putting another twist on For Friday’s Sake with a Trivia Night! Teams of 2-4 players can expect a game show style event with fun trivia that covers a variety of topics. We’ll do three rounds, each on the hour, so if you can’t arrive right at 5PM, no sweat! You’ll still be able to play. There will even be small prizes awarded to the FGS fans with the sharpest trivia knowledge! Come test your skills, grab a drink, and shop at your favorite Garden Center.

The Garden Center will have extended shopping hours with pumpkins, mums, pansies, houseplants, and more until 8PM! The Potting Shed will be open late as well, with seasonal drinks and Sunset Slush.

Introduction to the Art of Bonsai

Saturday, October 8, 10AM-2PM

Location: The Robin’s Nest

This engaging class is for those interested in learning about this fascinating horticultural art form. The class and hands-on workshop will teach the aesthetic aspects of classical bonsai along with the technical and horticultural fundamentals you’ll need to enjoy this wonderful hobby. The class will cover bonsai styles, design, pruning, wiring, container selection, potting, and care.

Fee is $75/person; includes all workshop materials you’ll need to create your very own bonsai, an introductory book, a detailed after care guide for your new tree, and light snacks

Ken Hallatt, bonsai artist, educator, and owner of Carolina Bonsai is past President of the Traingle Bonsai Society. With over 40 years of experience, Ken has trained with many gifted international bonsai artists and enjoys sharing this “growing art” with others.

Happy, Healthy Houseplants: Winter Care

Saturday, October 8, 10AM-11AM

Location: The Potting Shed

Did you know that caring for your houseplants during winter looks very different than caring for them in the summer? If you are wondering about how to best care for your plants in the dormant months, then this class is for you! We will talk about light, water, and humidity for your plants.

Fall Container Workshop

Create a colorful Fall container garden that you can show off all season long! Learn care tips and simple design techniques and unleash your creativity. Select your favorite colors with greenery and flowers to create that stunning “fill, spill, THRILL” look to complete your fall aesthetic.

Autumn Gnome Scavenger Hunt

Sunday, October 9, 10AM-4:30PM

Location: The Garden Center

The autumn weather is putting Petunia’s Gnomies into a mood of mischief! They’ll be hiding throughout the Garden Center and it’s up to you to find them and solve their all-new riddles! They’ll be hiding all day on Sunday, October 9th.

The clue sheet will be located within The Little Free Library. Make sure to stop there first, and check out the books inside while you’re there! This Scavenger Hunt is a self-guided event, which you can take at your own pace. If you have any questions, our events staff is here to help! We’ll be stationed at The Potting Shed area all day.

The Art of Honey Tasting

Thursday, October 13, 6PM-7PM

Location: The Robin’s Nest

Take a deep dive into the world of honey with a professional beekeeper from Buddha Bee Apiary. The class will begin with a presentation on how bees make honey and how it’s harvested from the hive. You’ll then be guided through six different varietals of North Carolina honey. By the end, you’ll have a new appreciation for this superfood as well as knowledge about how to properly taste and describe honey!

Fee is $35/person, includes honey samples

Friday, October 14, 5PM-8PM

Extended hours just got spooky!

Join us for yet another twist on For Friday’s Sake – a Monster Mash Theme Night! Be ready to get your boogie (monster) on! We’ll have extended shopping hours at the Garden Center, seasonal drinks at The Potting Shed, live music, a food truck, and the best part is we want you to come in costume! (Costumes are encouraged but not required.)

This is a family-friendly event. Please keep costumes PG-rated and kid-friendly, including dog costumes. This event is not intended to be scary.

Looking to add something fresh to your fall decor?

Join us in this brand-new fresh materials crafting workshop where we will assemble a succulent pumpkin perfect for a table centerpiece or unique autumn decor. You will learn some basic design skills while joyfully creating a beautiful piece. With different succulent color and size options to choose from, you can really let your creativity shine!

Fee is $40/person; includes all necessary materials and supplies, a mimosa, and light snacks. One person per pumpkin, please!

Tea with Alice & The Hatter

Saturday, October 15, 2PM-3PM

Curiouser and curiouser!

Join Alice and The Hatter at For Garden’s Sake for a crafting workshop and light refreshments on October 15. We will create Hatter Hat Pots together, experience a child-friendly “tea time,” and play a game with Alice! Children are welcome to attend in costume. Recommended for ages 6-10. Pumpkin Extravaganza

Sunday, October 16, 10AM-3PM

Location: The Garden Center

Celebrate all things pumpkin with us on Sunday, October 16! We’ll be hosting one more Pick & Paint Pumpkin Workshop! We’ll also be hosting a few local vendor booths where you can shop for pumpkin-themed decor and more! The Potting Shed will have a variety of pumpkin beers, ciders, and other seasonal fall drinks, as well as Sunset Slush. Don’t forget to grab a picture with your “gnomies” with our vintage blue Ford truck while you’re here. It will be the perfect day to pick out your pumpkins and have fun at your favorite Garden Center!

Wooden Sign Crafting Workshop

Sunday, October 16, 2PM-3:30PM

Location: The Robin’s Nest

We are excited to team up with the ladies at CASual Art Works to bring you a sign crafting workshop!

If you love multi-purpose decor, this workshop is for you. Create a holiday sign with a pumpkin stack on one side and an adorable snowman on the other! You’ll be able to enjoy your creativity all season long. This workshop is great for crafters of all experience levels!

Fee is $50/person; includes all necessary materials and supplies, a mimosa, and light snacks.

Fall Rose Care

Friday, October 21, 11AM-12PM

Location: The Robin’s Nest

Keep your roses lush, vigorous, and blooming up a storm! This class will cover all you need to know about how and when to fertilize, water, and prune your roses for the healthiest shrubs in the neighborhood. We’ll also discuss how to care for and prepare your rose bushes for the dormant winter months, as well as common rose pests and diseases and what to do to keep them under control.

Fee is $15/person; includes a pair of bypass pruners

For Friday’s Sake

Friday, October 21, 5PM-8PM

Location: The Garden Center

Need more time to shop? Well you’re in luck, because we are extending the Garden Center hours until 8PM! This will be our final For Friday’s Sake of the 2022 season, but we will have one more extended Friday event. (Scroll down for more info!)

The Potting Shed will be open and serving Sunset Slush, beer, wine, ciders, and seasonal drinks until 8PM, so come and enjoy the ambiance on the patio and take in the sunset. Don’t forget to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating – the patio tables go fast!

Costume Party with The Bulltown Strutters

Saturday, October 22, 11AM-1PM

Location: Animal Alley (near the goats!)

Throw on your favorite costume and get ready to party! The Bulltown Strutters are back at FGS performing a fun concert for the whole family!

The Bulltown Strutters are a Durham-based New Orleans style community band. They bring the party everywhere they go with their raucous mix of old-school New Orleans classics and new-school New Orleans funk, powered by a massive horns section and an extra dose of Durham craziness. Let loose and show us your dance moves!

Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun! Costumes are not required but they are enthusiastically encouraged. Please note that we do not provide seating; you are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating (if you can resist the urge to dance!)

Karaoke Night

Friday, October 28, 5PM-8PM

Location: The Garden Center

It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time for KARAOKE at FGS on this final extended hours night! This event is family-friendly and open to participants ages 10+. Music choices are limited to PG-rated songs. You can sign up to sing when you arrive! Sing your heart out while the sun sets over the lake.

The Garden Center will be open until 8PM so you can shop for fall essentials, houseplants, and more! Last chance to grab a pumpkin before Halloween! The Potting Shed will be open as well, serving Sunset Slush, local beers, wine, seltzers, cider and more seasonal drinks.

Get your holiday shopping done early and done local! Swing by our 2nd Annual FGS Holiday Market. We’ll have local artists, musicians, bakers, crafters, and small business owners who will have an amazing selection of handmade (or hand-baked) items that will make your holiday season shopping a breeze!

The Durham County Extension Master Gardeners will have a booth set up to answer any and all questions related to gardening and plants! Make sure to stop by and say hi!

Make sure you stay on the Nice List because Santa Clause is stopping by for some selfies!
