Easy Care Perennials and Annuals

Annuals| Perennials| Spring Gardening| Summer Gardening

Keeping your flower garden looking beautiful and healthy can be quite a daunting and time consuming task. Most of us can agree that we want to work smarter and not harder, especially when it comes to maintaining our outdoor spaces.  Easy to care for perennials and annuals are just what you need to maintain a gorgeous flower garden. A couple weeks ago, our garden center manager, Ann, offered a seminar about perennials and annuals that are easy to care for. If you missed it, no worries.  We are going to share the goods in today’s post.

Perennials

The summers around here (central NC) can be absolutely brutal.  Scorching temperatures–that are often paired with dry spells–can do quite the number on your garden.  While the perennials that we will suggest may not be the flashiest plants in your garden, they are easy to care for and will be great performers.  Most of them are drought-resistant, look good without much tending, and will survive the winter and return again year after year. Once you have them in your garden you will wonder how you ever survived without them.

Some of the easy-care perennials we suggest are

  • Black-eyed Susans (full sun)
  • Catmint/Nepeta Walkers Low (part sun, full sun)
  • Autumn Brilliance Fern (shade, but can take some sun)
  • Stella D’oro and Happy Returns Daylillies (full sun)
  • Echinacea Magnus and Kim’s Knee High/Purple Cone flowers (full sun)

Annuals

Annuals are most likely not going to return year after year (although some might surprise you), but they will offer gorgeous color in your flower garden all season long.  Some annuals do require a lot of maintenance to keep them looking great. Choosing annuals that are easy to care for and drought-resistant are perfect for gardeners who don’t have as much time to spend outdoors.

Some of the easy-care annuals we suggest are

  • Angelonia (full sun)
  • Lantana (full sun)
  • Vinca Cora (full sun)
  • Pennisetum Rubrum/Purple Fountain Grass (full sun)
  • Alternanthera (full sun, part sun)

Come see us and we will be delighted to help you fill your garden with these gorgeous and easy to care for perennials and annuals.
